A new study, led by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, finds that a low dose of sildenafil (sold as Viagra) may help some men in the U. S. who were prescribed the drug. The study, called the “Viagra for Men” trial, is conducted by researchers from Johns Hopkins University, Boston University and Harvard Medical School.
In the study, the researchers analyzed data from more than 30,000 men with erectile dysfunction, a condition that affects one in eight men in the U. These men had been prescribed the drug sildenafil for the treatment of ED, or erectile dysfunction. The data showed that men who used the drug for about 40 percent of their time, had a 25 percent lower risk of dying from all causes compared to those who had used the drug only to treat ED. The lower risk was most often seen among men who took the drug for less than a year.
“Sildenafil is a prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction,” said study author Dr. Steven Nissen, lead author of the study, who was not involved in the clinical trial. “It is important to note that patients in the study had very high rates of death from all causes, which may be associated with the use of sildenafil.”
Sildenafil was originally developed as a treatment for enlarged prostate glands in men. It was later reclassified as a drug for men with erectile dysfunction. Nissen has worked with other scientists at the University of North Carolina to develop sildenafil and its new drug,, and the drug was approved by the FDA in 1998. Nissen said that because of its side effects, the FDA approved the drug in 1998.

“A low dose of sildenafil may help some men who are taking sildenafil,” said study author Dr. Steven Nissen. “It may also help some men who are taking other medications for ED, which can lead to adverse effects such as vision loss.”
The study also shows that a low dose of the drug may not be as effective as the initial one, as it can also reduce the effectiveness of the drug, the study authors said.
“The benefit of low dose sildenafil is not well-established and may have adverse effects for some men in the study. We are currently evaluating the safety and efficacy of sildenafil in more than 50,000 men who have had ED,” Nissen said. “We will continue to monitor and evaluate these patients and will work with our physicians to develop more appropriate treatment.”
